Wash out - Grand Rapids, MI
Author: RAILOH

It must be real tricky to determine a wash out, if you could at all. I know that I see inspectors in the white pick up trucks on occasion that normally check boxes, I suppose to have them out there is an added bonus in inspections.

I see a CSX yard just North of the incident, however, read a post that it was another Railroad.

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — Stretches of 28th and 32nd streets have reopened after a train derailment in Wyoming Tuesday night.

A locomotive and a few cars of the freight train went off the tracks, which run beneath 28th Street SW just east of US-131. There have been no reports of injuries.

The precise cause of the derailment is not yet known, but the tracks appear to have shifted in the wet ground and the train simply rolled off the line. City workers had a backhoe and other equipment at the scene to dig the train free.

The derailment happened around 9:40 p.m. Both directions of 28th Street were closed between US-131 and Buchanan Avenue SW, but have since reopened.

This was on the Grand Elk, the Watco-owned short line that runs the former Conrail trackage in that area.

Grand Elk's 4125 is on its side. They are trenching to contain spilled fuel. Had a day of very heavy rains and melting snow here, with many roads closed and rivers in flood. Some good photos at: http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2018/02/train_derailment_underneath_28.html

I believe there was recent trackwork (ballast, ties), and perhaps it was all a bit soft, too soft, for the weight of the engines rolling over it at a slow speed. The yard limit board is nearby so train was running slowly.
