Yes it's a CSX Locomotive CSX Bought 12 NS SD40-2 ... So far i think this is the only 1 that has been Patched in the CSX Logo so far . The Reason that they Bought 12 NS locomotives , was B/C CSX gave NS 12 SD80MAC's CSX Painted over the NS logo @ Hungtion,WV & put the CSX Logo . So all 12 are to be patched with the csx Logo .

All 12 of those SD40-2's are destined to become SD40-3's. Or were at some point until that EHH idiot took over and stored, as well as sold off power that his dumb @$$ knew he would need.

All 12 Ex-NS/CR SD40-2's were rebuilt as RCO Equipped SD40-3's 4372 thru 4383 last year, with 4372, 4375, 4376, 4379 normally assigned to Rocky Mount Terminal in Yard Service

So the number on this unit is??? 8909 on the side 3438 in the number board. I'm guessing 3438 is the old NS number??? Try that on your model RR.

3438 would indeed have been the NS number.

If any of the ex-NS SD40-2s actually saw revenue service on CSX before going into the rebuild program, it certainly didn't last very long.

They didn't... CSX got them in the trade and almost immediately rounded them up and shipped them off to Boise for their Dash-3 rebuild... None of them ever ran in black for CSX, and I recall the disappointment from the railfan community from this decision (I was among them!)

Obviously whoever was planning their transport to Boise and the people whose decision it was to waste the big CSX shopping-cart logos on them weren't communicating with each other.

I saw them all lined up at Huntington WV before they were sent off to Boise

That's an old photo and all 12 of those ex-NS units were shipped off and rebuild at Boise before ever wearing that scheme in revenue service... I would bet some shop crew was just told to paint over all the NS markings ASAP and they followed the prior policy of all new repaints getting the boxcar logo...

And despite them never having been used in revenue service a certain HO model manufacturing company - thinking those were current and still in service, and not realizing they were never in revenue service - has announced those short term patched black units instead of more useful CSX units in YN1, YN2, YN3 or predecessor paint...

Don't be disappointed that we never used horsey engines as is. We may be a lot of odd things, but one thing we know...is NS engines are junk. If we get some for what ever reason they MUST be remanufactured.
