The lead locomotive does NOT have a blown turbocharger!

OK, so what does it have??? A CSX engineer friend told me smoking like that is usually a blown turbocharger causing the improper burning of fuel, so enlighten us...

Help me out with the phrase "blown turbocharger." My understanding is that a "failing" turbocharger can cause a smoking problem when the oil seals inside the turbo fail and allow engine oil to escape into the intake side of the turbo and then into the combustion chambers of the engine where it burns resulting in the thick black smoke we see coming out of the stack. A "blown" turbocharger usually causes an immediate catastrophic failure within the engine and thus an immediate shut-down. Am I misunderstanding?

If I remember correctly, the most common cause of such smoke on GE units, and also "flames out the stack", is simply a bad/broken injector nozzle tip. If the nozzle tip can no longer atomize the highly pressurized fuel, then pretty much raw fuel tends to "flood" that particular cylinder/power assembly, producing LOTS of heavy black smoke, and sometimes large flames from the stack.

You are correct, that is what I am referring to. I never saw any flames from the stack associated with injectors.

Then you haven't been on either the BNSF or UP railroads, out west?

I'm referring no flames on this particular train. I've been watching trains for over 40 years, I've seen flames from the stack.

OK, but you didn't state it THAT way. Only 40 years? I began working in the RR motive power industry at EMD June 1, 1962, so I guess I have more than 20 years (including my high school and college years) on your "watching", since you seem to want to keep score.

Hey RFandPfan, I for one am damned appreciative of your vids and posts, but unfortunately some subscribers seem to want to nit-pick every sentence or phrase of an explanation the author posts about his (or her) vid or post. Ta hell with 'em! Keep up the good work my friend! There's a ton of us that look forward to yours and so many others posts, who take THEIR time to create them and then SHARE their efforts. To those who wish to critique their posts in any way... well, that's why God gave us a middle finger...

OK, I'm done.
