The KCS “Belles” Don't Run Here Any More
Author: NSSpike

Or at least that's the way it appears these days on the NS Alabama East End district. Oh, there would be a few periods once in a while in past years where the power for the KSC stacks out of Dallas would have solid NS power. And when that occurred it would last at the most a couple of weeks. And when it did, we figured NS was paying back the HP hours. But we are headed into five weeks now and although I don't get out every day, myself and a few others haven't seen anything close to any KCS power leading anything on the East End district. Especially on east bound stacks 220 & 24E.

Now the thought has crossed my mind that with all the problems on the UP in south Texas and the Houston area effecting KCS trains that operate on trackage rights with the Union Pacific, that KCS may have more of their power tied up (or tied down) on trains operating in that area??

Could be a combination of both of the causes listed above. In any case we sure do miss the KCS Belle's and the occasional gray units that would lead the east bound stacks into the north Georgia area.

Below are a few photos from the first few weeks of April.

#1. NS #2555 ( EMD SD70) leads NS 69C (ATLANTA, GA – ROBERTA, ALA) with 71 Argos Cement Train Mts hoppers holding on the siding west bound at Temple Georgia.

#2. NS #1141 leads NS 220 (DALLAS, TX (KCS IDAAT)- ATLANTA, GA) east bound on the main in Temple Georgia.

#3. NS I-98 (NEW ORLEANS, LA - ATLANTA, GA) extra 298 with UP #7069 on the point east bound into Temple Georgia.

#4. NS A25 (DOUGLASVILLE, GA. - MUSCADINE, AL. Turn) local with two EMD SD60E for power will hold the siding and wait on east bound 172.

#5. East bound NS 172 (NEW ORLEANS, LA (UP QLINSL) - LINWOOD, NC) on the mainline Temple Georgia.

#6. NS 23E (ATLANTA, GA - DALLAS, TX (KCS IATDA2) west bound Temple Georgia.

#7. NS 220 (DALLAS, TX (KCS IDAAT)- ATLANTA, GA) meets NS 23E (ATLANTA, GA - DALLAS, TX (KCS IATDA2) Temple Georgia.

#8. Another 220 with more NS power. Wait, whats that 3rd out??? Ferromex #4697.

#9. And yet another 220 with solid NS power rolls by AMTK 19 in Temple Georgia.

thanks very much for all of this operating info.

does anybody know where i can get a timetable or track diagram for this subdivision/territory. i may try to create a dispatching simulation of this territory if i can get enough operating info.

also, what is the name of this "east end" subdivision of the n.s. and where are the crew changes?

thanks for any additional info.....

Can provide a time table via e-mail. Use the private message here on TO
and provide an email address.

That is it. NS Alabama Division... East End district.
Runs from Birmingham Alabama to Austell Ga.

Birmingham Norris Yard to Atlanta Inman Yard are crew change locations.
Note some trains may terminate in at either terminal.
See listing of train ID's above.

Interesting first shot with the 2555 present. That unit can be found in a photo from the Western board indicating it is currently in UP pool service in California.
