Eastern Railroad Discussion > A specific (and bizarre) Sheffield OH questionDate: 04/24/18 13:36 A specific (and bizarre) Sheffield OH question Author: richs At the risk of thinking, and having others think, I've lost my mind I have decided to post this question anyway: I thought I recalled ( over 30 years ago) a single track that paralleled both Colorado and Old Colorado Ave; just north of both, yet south of the Black River and just west of East River Rd. I could swear I was behind a business on the north side of Colorado and came upon it. I'm hoping a Lorain County member can shed some light on this. Otherwise I'll return to the twilight zone. Thanks,
Rich S Date: 04/24/18 14:14 Re: A specific (and bizarre) Sheffield OH question Author: callum_out Hey don't feel bad, you mention abandoned lines in the LA (CA) area and people look at you
like some space alien. Out Date: 04/24/18 15:19 Re: A specific (and bizarre) Sheffield OH question Author: colehour richs Wrote:

You can access the map in my Dropbox folder: https://www.dropbox.com/s/o2e3alq71aff35v/OH_Avon_224853_1953_24000_geo.pdf?dl=0 Hope this is of help. That's old, all right - about 65 years. Date: 04/24/18 16:06 Re: A specific (and bizarre) Sheffield OH question Author: colehour There is a more recent map, from 1963, but I figured the older map would be more likely to be of use in this case.
I should have also included the URL of the USGS site: https://nationalmap.gov/historical/index.html Date: 04/24/18 17:32 Re: A specific (and bizarre) Sheffield OH question Author: RAILOH Actually from the area and having worked & traveled routinely on this stretch of road, I don't recall anything.
This map from 1903 only shows the NKP & Lake Shore Electric, to the North. This link of maps from the Library of Congress may provide more. https://www.loc.gov/collections/railroad-maps-1828-to-1900/?fa=subject:ohio%7Clocation:ohio Edited 2 time(s). It ran south off the NKP main, just west of Lake Breeze Rd. Crossed Colorado, then swung around to run west along the south side of Colorado, but back a ways. It ended at the former National Gypsum plant on Henderson Dr near the Black River. It was sporadically used, at best. Only thing I ever saw on it, from the 60's to the 80's, was stored pipe gons in 1982. There were crossbucks where it crossed the dead end of Root Rd, visible from Colorado Ave. The track is now gone.

Viewing google maps, there appears to be a line extending through trees along River Industrial Park Road on the East side of Lorain extending to Henderson, and another vertical line from Lake Breeze road extending southward to the French Creek Nature Center.
I’ve always figured that it was the line began, but not completed, that was to connect the NYC in Olmsted Falls to Lorain that I’ve read about in the past. Edited 1 time(s). This is exactly what I walked along, and the time frame is correct. Thanks to all who took the time to provide me "leads". Rich S |
