AAR's Summary of Cl 1 Locomotive counts

Interesting high level summary of class 1 RR locomotive ownership. Looks like total locomotive population peaked in 2016. And volume of new locomotives acquired in 2017 plunged as # of rebuilds exceeded # of new units for the first time since 2012 (and perhaps ever?), 236 new v. 332 rebuild.

Thank the Tier IV BS for that one.  In 2014 builders were racing to complete as many Tier III units as they could.  2015 and 16 saw some sample T-4 units delivered and the verdict was that rebuilds are preferable.

Excludes 3 steam locomotives used for excursions.     Class 1....UP 844,  Do the Challenger and Big Boy count?  They're really not in service.
