Eastern Railroad Discussion > Trip to MichiganDate: 08/05/18 19:00 Trip to Michigan Author: rkap10 Hi, I am planning a trip with two friends to Michigan 8/13 - 8/16 and plan to spend our time on the Lake State Railway and Great Lakes Central. I would greatly appreciate any information concerning operations of these railroads, i.e., what jobs run where. Thanks. Bob Kaplan

From our visit to GLC and Lake States in May 2017, saw a southbound freight leave Saginaw yard about 200 PM on a Sunday and in Oct. 2017, saw same train leaving about 800 AM. This train often has CSX power but when we saw it, a Lakes State unit was leading. Also there is a night job to Midland which we saw in Oct 2017 returning to Saginaw about 900 AM with a single SW1500. In May 2017, there was a job that went north on a Monday AM but we missed it. On Great Lakes Central, May 2017, we chased the northbound freight from Owosso to Clare where it met a turn down from Cadillac and they swapped cars. Got both jobs at Clare and chased the Owosso job back to Owosso. The northbound run is plagued with poor sun angles but the southbound was fine, although tough to get a lot of locations; track speed is perhaps 40 MPH and back roads, some dirt, run at right angles to the line. Best shots southbound were at Shepherd, where they stopped to switch, with a museum and restored Ann Arbor station across from grain elevators and also at North Star, nice shot passing a closed elevator.
