UP Not Happy With CSX
Author: DLM

See the announcement below.  Many eastbound UP/CSX jointline routings in UMXU containers will be canceled.  This will require many rubber tire interchanges in Chicago and Memphis that use to be steelwheel interchanges.

Eastbound Interline Service Changes to traffic handled by CSXT
Announcement Number: IM2018-260
8-3-2018

August 3, 2018

Subject:  Eastbound Interline Service Changes to traffic handled by CSXT

Dear Premium Intermodal Customers:

As a result of CSXT interline intermodal service changes, Union Pacific is no longer able to offer a number of interline intermodal services to the eastern U.S.  Due to the complexity of CSXT’s intermodal service changes, Union Pacific is providing a matrix to assist you in identifying any effects to your interline business with Union Pacific, as well as presenting adaptive solutions.

Traffic in-gated before midnight on September 16, 2018, will be handled according to the current plan.  Beginning September 17, 2018, the operating practices outlined in the matrix will become effective.  Therefore, please review these changes carefully, and discuss the new service options with your Union Pacific sales representative.

We recognize that service changes can be inconvenient and untimely; however, the value of Union Pacific’s premium intermodal network is that we offer multiple intermodal routes and solutions.  We sincerely appreciate your business, and we will work to address all service changes by developing optimal solutions to meet your transportation needs.

Sincerely,

Premium Marketing and Sales

This might be good news for NS, if they can handle the additional traffic.

UP should just outright purchase CSX.  There, problem solved.

Even if NS could, is this idea even plausible?

I keep hearing that there's a lack of truck drivers out there and that this is why a lot of these type of shippments have been going by rail. Does it seem as if that equation has changed?

You left off a few words. Here you go.

"CSX: How yesterday moves, next month. Maybe."

Your results may vary.

I recently read in an article that quoted a high ranking official from the American Truckers Association state that there are ~55,000 trucks, he did not qualify truck type but it read as OTR & LTL drivers, that are parked because of a lack of drivers. The industry is having issues attraching drivers even with wage rates ranging from $75-$90K per year. He stated that the industry believes there are two significant factors playing into this, one very few millenials want to get into a blue collar job such as trucking, becasue the work is deemed "too hard", and two those that are slightly older who are looking to make a career change understand that with the great interest in self guided / autonomous trucks, they see the trucking industry as a dying industry, even if autonomous trucks are still 10-15 years out. That would put them in need to find a new career path when they are approaching 50.

Regards,
Russ

And CSX's answer is below.  And yes, there is and will continue to be a shortage of truckers to pull the containers.=18pxIntermodal Service Announcement - Domestic=18px=18px  =12pxCSX Transportation (CSXT) makes regular service changes and adjustments to manage a dynamic network with evolving needs.  Near-term service announcements follow below.  Unless specifically noted, changes are applicable to all domestic traffic and all equipment types.

=12pxNew Interchange Plan with Union Pacific
CSXT has communicated a new interchange plan to the Union Pacific with a goal to enhance reliability, create more consistent freight flows and provide a superior service product to our customers.  By simplifying steelwheel interchanges in Chicago, reducing multiple work events and gaining efficiencies through nearby market shifts, we are confident your freight will benefit from the improved effectiveness of our jointline service.

The focal point of the new interchange plan is establishing four steelwheel interchange destinations over Chicago, listed in the chart below.  The underlying precept behind each of these steelwheel interchange destinations is their ability to serve existing business in strong markets as well as accommodate prominent nearby markets, thereby offering enhanced service solutions to maintain and provide opportunities for business growth.  Alternatively, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Worcester can still be served direct via crosstown from the Union Pacific Chicago terminals to the CSXT-served Bedford Park terminal.

=12pxEastbound Service Changes
The Union Pacific has responded with eastbound service changes resulting in the cancellation of some of CSXT's east coast destinations effective September 17, 2018.  It is important to note that the vast majority of the volume moving in these lanes can continue to move with UP and CSXT and will enjoy the benefits of an even stronger jointline service product.  Your CSXT account manager will work with you to ensure you are taking advantage of steelwheel service to the New England, New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania/Maryland and Ohio Valley markets.  These geographic solutions are as follows:
=12pxCSXT Steelwheel Interchange Destinations over Chicago=12pxNearby CSXT Market Served=11pxChambersburg, PA=11pxBaltimore, MD=11pxKearny, NJ=11pxPhiladelphia, PA=11pxNorthwest Ohio ICTF=11pxOhio Valley including Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus OH; Detroit MI=11pxSpringfield, MA=11pxWorcester, MA
=12pxAs part of the new interchange plan, CSXT and the Union Pacific agreed on a Memphis interchange.  For CSXT customers, this alleviates congestion by removing freight from the Chicago interchange while facilitating a more direct and reliable service product to Nashville and other southeastern points on the CSXT core network with significantly fewer miles traveled.  The Union Pacific will begin interchanging southeastern freight over Memphis, TN effective September 17, 2018.

Updated schedules will be available in ShipCSX on September 17.

Westbound Service Changes
Congruent with the eastbound Memphis interchange shift, current westbound service interchanging to the Union Pacific at New Orleans will be changing.  Select lanes will route over Memphis instead of New Orleans while other lanes will be discontinued.  Please refer to the attachment for westbound service changes effective September 17, 2018.  To avoid shipment delays, the last day to submit billing with the New Orleans interchange is September 16, 2018.

=12pxUpdated schedules will be available in ShipCSX on September 17.

Since when is the trucking industry a "dying industry"...???!!! I work for a rather large east coast company and we would be in serious trouble without trucks!!

And just like PTC, automation of trucks will NOT solve everything...!!??

Do some reading about the laws that truckers have to follow now.... Enough said...!!!??!!

RIF - Reading is Fundamental - The person quoted from the ATA stated that the perception from potential new hires is that it is a dying industry because of the forthcoming autonomous trucks. I never said that I believed that it is a dying industry, maybe you should read before your get pissed off!

And for your information, my father worked for Overnite Transportation for 46 years. I worked there for two. My current career for which I have been in for 17+ years, depends on both OTR flatbed trucks and LTL carriers. I fully understand that the new electronic log rules and regs are changing things every day, including shipping costs. So please back up and unwide your skivvies!!!!???!!!!

The trucker electronic log books have been mentioned in several investor conference calls as driving up prices, and driving down timely service. For the record, I think this is a good thing.

Get people to follow the rules, and give them a shelter against unreasonable expectations.  Put a lid on the cowboys, and respect the guys trying to do the job right.  Not unlike the perpetual conflict on the railroads between the turn/burn guys and the people who want a lot more work/family balance.
