Chambersburg Pa
Author: mully

Hi all

If I remember CSX crosses NS there, how many trains does CSX run through there?   Any good spots where they cross to watch?

Thanks
Gary

The only way to get to the CSX bridge over NS in Chambersburg is to enter private property. It's really not worth the effort. The CSX tracks end just north of the bridge. You might catch a train on the bridge when CSX switches Ventura Foods, but only if there are alot of cars going into the siding. If there are only 3-4 cars, the locomotive doesn't have to pull up as far as the bridge to clear the switch.

Isn't this CSX trackage a part of the former Western Maryland Railway line?

Yes indeed. Its the former WM line from Hagerstown through Chambersburg to Shippensburg. The track has been removed through the center of Chambersburg.

Thank you so much, I thought that I was correct.  CSX tries very hard to get rid of WM tracks all the time, to help eliminate business in many places.  I'm so glad that I had the chance to ride the Western Maryland Railway before CSX ruined it.

It was the street running through town they did away with.

Q015/Q016 and D773 are it.  The best place to watch the local or 016 taking its train apart is Orchard Drive (a car wash is nearby the tracks).  You can also go to Kriner Road....there is a bridge over the yard. Just don't hang out there too long. The last I heard, CSX was watching railfans.....

You can also go down Rte. 316. Turn on Country Rd. It will take you back to the yard. Just don't linger there either.....signs are posted.  Also, Rte.316 follows the CSX line south for awhile.

Your best bet for trains is NS though.

I should also mention that 016 comes in daylight now (afternoons). You might get lucky...

KH00 also runs up NS to Ship., then down the Lurgan Runner to Letterkenny.  Times on this train varies...
