Today on the Kanawha River RR in Charleston WVa and area
Author: msns2557

Hi all. Thought I'd share some shots that we managed to get today. We started down in North Carolina and ended our day in the Mingo Jct Ohio area. On the way, we stopped in the Chelyan/Quincy/Charleston WVa area too see what perhaps might be a moving on the Kanawha River RR down here. We lucked out pretty well. Here are three shots from the day down here along the old NYC/PC/CR/NS and Dickenson Yard.

Shot 1.  Upon arrival at Dickenson Yard in Quincy WVa we stopped to get out mandatory half hour break in. At the west end of the yard here we spotted 2 sets of units. WAMX 6010 and WAMX 6007, both ex NS SD60's still in NS Paint,  along with CITX SD60 6000 and CEFX SD60 6001. Seeing how the light at first wasn't real great we hung around for perhaps an hour, hoping to get a shot or 2. After walking up to the bridge over the west end of the yard, we noticed the 2 Blue SD60's getting ready to make a move. Here are the 6000 and 6001 heading north out of the yard after about 30 minutes or so getting the power fired up and a walk around then moving over a track to back down on a short freight. They are seen here leaving the yard.

Shot 2.  Who says SD45's are dead?  Tho this one has been rebuilt into SD40-2 specs it still retains it's SD45 Carbody as does it's sister unit behind it. Here is WAMX/KNWA 4213 with 4211 near the yard office here in Quincy at the old NS Yard in Dickenson. They sure are big.

Shot 3. Last one of the stay here. After getting some shots of the 4213 and a few others over by the Wal Mart here, we headed north. Didn't think we would see, let alone get another chance at the 6000/6001 on their train, but we did. We are closer to Charleston here, where US60/I64/I77 cross over the single track and prepare to head into downtown Charleston. They were making perhaps 20-25 mph along the way and we had just enough time to pull onto the shoulder and get a shot. Traffic was not bad on the highway, but we didn't want to sit too long.

Well, tomorrow is another day and what wonders it will bring remain to be seen. We are headed for Lansing Mich after picking up in Streetsboro Ohio. Hubby says there are a few things we might catch along the way (Perhaps a DRGW Tunnel Motor on the Wheeling near Bellevue) Just have to wait and see.  Thanks to all for looking. Be well everyone. Kristie

I like motorcycling on Route 60 and it parallells this line. Every now and then you might see something going on.

Does NS still own this trackage? I worked with a hogger who used to run this line before the CR split.

No, not any more. They sold it to WATCO a few years back and they run it as the Kanawha River RR.They use ex NS SD60'S on the coal trains, WAMX GP35 rebuilds on the yard and the CEFX/CITX ex SOO SD60'S along with the SD45/SD40-2 on everything else. They operate the entirety of the line south from Columbus Ohio to the coal fields south and east of this ex NS/CR Yard. Ben
