Conrail Shared Assets Lehigh Line -10/4
Author: OCtrainguy

On the morning of October 4th, Heritage Units showed the Georgia Central engine in Port Reading (came in on an ethanol train) and the Wabash leading NS 294 bound for northern New Jersey and two of the Facebook groups confirmed the latter.  So I took the morning to try and get both heritage engines as I haven't been able to photo either one.  I started off in Sewaren, just south of Port Reading, NJ and saw a Port Reading job building an ethanol train.  I got a few photos there and then headed up to Port Reading to catch it on the Garden State Secondary.  I caught a yard job working on cut of cars and another crew spinning power a the diamond (where the CNJ and Reading crossed).  When the yard job shoved their cut back into Port Reading Yard, the crew with the ethanol train got the okay to proceed up to Carteret as seen in the first photo.  So my time there was rather productive.

At that point. the NS 294  was reported in western New Jersey, so I headed to Westfield along the Conrail Shared Assets Lehigh Line.  Unbeknownst to me, there was some type of maintenance work going on as one track was closed and the trains were running at a reduced speed.  Here's how I fared in Westfield.

2.  The first train was eastbound empty trash train with 7501 & 1174
3.  Next was 24Z with 9461 & 8443

More to follow..

Continuing the photos from Westfield...

4.  NS 212 with 4072 & 1001
5.  Not 100% sure of this one, but it may be Conrail local MA1 out of Manville Yard - lite power heading east with NS 5313
6.  An eastbound intermodal with NS 1157 and GECX (ex-CSX) 7768.  Could be 20E or 22V, but I am not sure.

Continuing the photos...

7.  An empty baretable train heads west with 2736 for power
8.  After stopping near Manville (NJ) for a crew change and awaiting the westbound to clear in the area of CP Potter, the 294 with the Wabash engine proceeds east.  Originally, the 294 dropped it's train in Bethlehem, PA and continued to northern New Jersey as lite power.  Lately, the 294 has been bringing some cars with them.
9.  Going away photo of the Wabash engine

Got two videos to share next...

First video is of the westbound baretable train and the second is of the NS 294.

Also noting that the crossing here is a quiet crossing, so once the gates go down, you won't hear the train horns.

It was a good time trackside.  Hope you enjoy the photos and videos.

Thanks for the pictures, 5313 was heading the MA-1. I saw him banging cars in Bound Brook.

Good catch on the Central of Georgia unit. He spent about 18 hours under the bridge in Cartaret.
