Cumberland Valley Rail Trail
Author: ns1000

Hi everyone.

I recently explored the CVRT with my dad. It runs from Shippensburg, PA to Newville, PA. There is also an one mile stretch open just south of Carlisle, PA.

Pics 1-3: There is an old power plant building near Ship U that used to get coal by rail (also the start of the rail trail).  This place is just off where the restored PC boxcar sits.  Well, they are in the process of getting a hopper car there too. The hopper was sitting in western Chambersburg, PA.  Power plant building...

Is this by chance the ex PRR/PC/CR to Hagerstown Md? My grandparents lived in Mechanicsburg Pa with their backyard pretty much up hard against the main thru here, right at what was once Eberly Lumber there in Mechanicsburg. Grand dad was the senior Conductor on the PRR Broadway Limited back then, when I first caught the bug, which would have been 1967-1972 or so. His run was from NYP TO HBG.Used to be about 6 scheduled trains daily thru Mechanicsburg then, 3 South and 3 north, all about 3-4 hrs apart thru town. Extras were run at times and of course there was a local that ran out of Shiremanstown to work the industries along the way. It was one of these locals on which I got my first ever cab ride, in  a Pennsy SW type unit. No 6 axle units on any of the trains that I recall. I do remember one time when the RDG detoured over the line due to a derailment on their own trackage. That was a real busy day. Thanks for sharing. Ben

The ROW was donated by Conrail in 1995. The 9.5 miles was done in two parts between 2004-2006.

To further answer the other question, the trail runs 9.5 miles from Ship. to Newville. The long term vision is for the trail to extend the whole 22 miles to Carlisle.
