For those that don't know, here ya go. Taken at the Fulton County Rail Road in the greater Atlanta area over the Thanksgiving Day Holiday.

Shot 1. Show what the roller bearing set looks like not installed on an axle or locomotive. from the front side.

Shot 2. And here are what the actual bearing itself looks like from "inside". The bearings came off FC GP38-2 2000 rear truck and rear axle.. There was a rather large "scoring" of the bearing on this side. Nice gouge in it.

Shot 3. The unit, Fulton County GP38-2 2000 Ex OMLX and NS/IT before here.


BTW this unit, FC 2001 is one of 2 ex Illinois Terminal GP38-2's that came here via OMLX.  Thanks for looking.  Ben

It's a dirty shame what has happened to the Hyatt Bearing name.  Once on par with Timken, at some point after General Motors spun them off, the name got attached to garbage Chinese made bearings. My employer got 20 class 8 trucks a couple of years back that mistakenly got the Chinese Hyatts instead of the Timkens we ordered.  Whitin six monthes the bearings were literally falling apart.  The dealer had to change out 80 wheel ends (160 bearings and 160 races) under warranty.

Since the name Timken was brought up, here's their AP Industrial bearing catalog which includes railroad applications.

The "Scoring" is not a defect, it is an oil grove in the thrust bearing to assure lubrication of the end of the axle when it bears against the thrust block.  The axle can move laterally in a Hyatt Bearing and the thrust bearing limits that movement.  The same is not true of Timken or SKF Bearings, which limit the lateral by the design of the rollers and races.

Are these bearings filled with a heavy gear oil or packed with grease?
And do they need reoiled and or repacked every so often?

Those EMD Hyatt roller bearings were generally filled with a fairly light "Roller Bearing" oil, very similar to Texaco HD57, as used in plain bearings, like traction motor support bearings.
