when the final station is reached the engineer has to walk the entire legnth of the train to set in the front of the train for a return trip?

Correct, however those METRA commute trains are not really all that long (8 to 10 cars at the most). The walk to the other end isn't takes the time anyway, it's changing and re-initializing the PTC that is time consuming.

Before PTC, the typical time from stop to going the other way was six minutes.
