Just spotted the Monongahela Railway heritage unit from my window, passing by Winding Hill crossing this morning. 

How come I never see one when the weathers warmer and I'm close to the tracks?   :o)

Must be on 211, agree with sighting difficulty during warm weather too!

Thanks to both of you for the info! Can you also help me understand how you match up a particular train with its 'number' 211? Is there a weblink that would show the relationship, specifically on the Lurgan branch? 

Same for 12R... Is that the name of a particular train or is that the line it's on?

Norfolk Southern uses a series of alphanumeric (letters and numbers) codes to distinguish trains, directions, cargo, etc.

211 and its flip side, 212, run between Atlanta and Secaucus NJ, carrying intermodal containers and trailers.  That's in the "2". Other trains, like 213, run from the Harrisburg PA area and Birmingham AL, also carrying intermodal. Other cargo like loaded autos, coal, oil, etc get their own symbols.

If a 211 has a second departure within the same day, the 2 is replaced with a letter.  The system takes a while to understand, but it works for them.

Search this website, or search "NS train symbols" on the web for
more info.  Radio communications will use the symbols, which
helps in identifying a specific train if you're not familiar with the
territory.

Yes, the 8025 is on 211 headed to Atlanta. The last of the NS Heritage units I need to shoot in the wild.... Should be here tomorrow mid-day. It will be a whopping 48F and Intermittant clouds, so in reality it will be completely overcast....
