Old MARC unit passing through old stomping grounds (CSX 9969)
Author: ddavies

CSX 9969 came east today at Shenandoah Junction, WV, with inspection train W003.  I believe that 9969 was one of the former MARC "red nose" GP40WH-2.  As he was about to pass me, the DS told him to get some rest, so the train may be spending the night at Brunswick Yard (MD).

Yessir. The former MARC GP40WH-2 69. Rebuilt by MPI in 01/1996 from MARC GP40 32. And before that...CR 3051, PC 3051, NYC 3051.
Nice photo, by the way.

I've often wondered why the powers to be did not rebuild a few of their former Western Maryland Railway F units into special passenger units to pull office car specials as Norfolk Southern did.  The WM units though old were in tremendous shape when Chessie merged the railroad into the fold, but of course the railroad bosses on Chessie ran those last WM units into the ground.  But they surely would look terrific pulling that train rather than that 9969.  Just my thought.  Thanks for sharing your photo.

As you implied, the WM units all left the Chessie roster by the early 80s, but it’s worth noting yhat CSX actually DID repaint and assign several former Clinchfield and L&N F units sometime in the mid 80s and used them to haul their executive train 20 years before the NS did the same, and even ran them hauling freight in the form of early Roadrailers on the former L&N. Those units even eventually were repainted into the YN2 scheme before leaving the roster in the 90s in favor of F40PHs.

2 points of irony:
-None of the NS F units have any historical ties to any of NS’s original component roads. 2 are actually B&O units.

-I believe at least 1 if not 2 of the CSX F units ended up on the WVC in Elkins and are now in WM paint, offering todays fans a contiued opportunity to see WM paint hauling freight and passengers on former WM trackage on a daily basis in 2018.

Yes, Dave, it tied down on #6 Runner in Brunswick for the night.  Gerry

Yes. They have 2.

DGVR 67 is former CSXT 118/CRR200

DGVR 415 is former CSXT 117/CRR 869

CSX could have kept the 2 E8's they picked up in the Conrail split. I believe both were in good shape and sold soon after receiving them.

They could have, but they already had the F40’s at that point that were specifically on the roster to haul the business train, and unless I’m mistaken those E units ended up becoming Bennett Levins PRR E units, so that worked out just fine! ;-)

And still well taken care of, though third one from Conrail in Port Jervis not so much!

In my opinion this is one of the nicest-looking inspection trains out there these days.  Nice photo.

Have not seen anything mentioned of this,  but are the lights between the number boards on 9969 no longer in operation?     Have not seen them working since they installed the ditch lights which is always quite obvious when seeing photos of this unit.   They were working after CSX got the unit and before the ditch lights were later added.

If they are not covered or removed all lights must be functional...that doesn't mean you have turn them on though. For example if the ditch lights work and that provides compliance then you don't need anything else but the regular headlight. A mars light or anything extra would not be used. But if you got some of everything...then you've got enough spares if anything breaks down.
