What is the function of all of the formal Conrail rail yards in Northern New Jersey today?  Has their function changed since prior to the Conrail split?  This would include Oak Island, Kearny and Croxton yards among others.  Are there any CNJ or Reading yards active in the Northern NJ area today?

Port Readng yard is always bustling, as is Manville.  Both are former Reading Company.  Express Rail occupies part of the former CNJ Elizabthport yard, while the Harborside (?) yard at Port Newark, also former CNJ is always booming.

Croxton is an NS intermodal yard (no mixed freight) and I believe Oak Island classifies mixed freight for CSX and NS. North Bergen (and Little Ferry?) are CSX intermodal yards (Little Ferry for autoracks).

I wouldn't say croxton sees no mixed freight. A pair of trains operate between Croxton and Allentown. The 32A gets shifted at croxton for suffern locals and croxton proper freight.

Yep when they split CR, NS built a small yard for general freight at Croxton west of County Rd in the vicinity of the old engine facility. And answer the original question most if not all of the yards in North Jersey have been retained and used for same purpose.
