Does anyone in modelling ever try to do a model engine in the wacky fix it anyway you can situations like this one?!? Some things I see in my work are telling about the railroads attitude toward repairs...sometimes it's fix them right...sometimes it's grab what on hand and use it.

For about two decades BNSF has had older painted C44s running around with non-matching H1 or H2 AC doors on them...
It happens on virtually any railroad that has distinctively different paint schemes each making up large percentages of fleets.   Those railroads with stale, never changed schemes and/or only a few special painted one-of units don't have as much of an issue because on those roads what is available in the pinch of getting a unit back in service is more likely going to match.

I actually never really thought about it until now. But now that I hear it, it sounds like a really cool idea.

For years there was a CR dash 8 running around with a BNSF front cab door and a BNSF dash 9 with a Conrail front cab door. I always assumed they both passed through the Altoona shops for cab repairs around the same time frame and the doors got swapped somehow.

And yes, there are modelers out there that model these idiosyncrasies

No need to kitbash this, all you need to do is paint the new color and apply decals to the hood door doors (be sure the unit is weathered before you start) and you will end up like this.

The ROCK was famous for this door swapping, you would see all kinds of variations of their hood doors swapped around blue on red units and red on blue units and so on.

I have painted a few ROCK units painted this way for several people, easy to do and fun too!

Not the best shot but it's handy on the computer. A black cab door.

Possibly in the current issue of Classic Trains (not handy for reference at the moment), J David Ingles has a photo essay on this phenomenon in the final months of Rock Island's existence.

Here's a shot of a Rock U-boat taken by Doug Weitzman.  The lettering spells out "RoIslaland."

One of my favorites was this retrograde "Pennsy" unit
PC 3479 (ex D&RGW), seen at Harbor Creek, PA in
Mar of 1976.
