NS Announces 2019 Intermodal Service Changes
Author: JPB

Some of these changes appear to be related to already announced reduction of NS-UP steel-wheel interchange offerings (IIRC) and some are discontinuance of TOFC or International Container handling on trains that I presume will continue to operate (eg, no more international containers to be handled between Chicago and Ayer (ie, 22K/23K). In my observations, 22K/23K rarely handled anything other than 1-2 miles of JBHU, Hub, or EMP domestic containers).

Agreed. That pair of trains is normally almost all domestic, normally single-stacked for clearance purposes.

Other than the listed 23/22K does anyone have symbols for the other discontinued trains? The NS website doesn't give symbols.

I was wondering the samething especially for Va and NC.  Looks like Norfolk, Greensboro and Charlotte traffic is affected

From what this says, it sounds to me like the following will happen:

211 will no longer work at Greensboro.
215 & 216 will no longer have any trailers.
282 & 295 will no longer have any trailers.
240/241 will no longer have any trailers.
21E/26E will no longer have any trailers.
294/25Z will no longer have any trailers (they rarely do anyway).
22K/23K will no longer have marine containers (they rarely do anyway)

Discontined service lanes doesn’t always mean discontinued trains.  One intermodal train may have multiple blocks (or service lane between city pairs) within its consist.

Most of these changes are very low volume lanes for domestic or international traffic.

I see that the service between Greencastle, PA and Rossville, TN is being discontinued on April 1.  Isn't this the only remaining service lane operating from the Greencastle facility?  Does anyone know what NS' plans are for Greencastle?

201/202 are the only trains that work Greencastle.

I also wonder about the future of that facility...

Unless something has changed recently, NS 240 / 241 have consisted almost exclusively of UPS TOFC. This train operates between Chicago & Cincinnati. Based on the changes, it sounds like this train will no longer operate. Can anyone confirm?

21E/26E also haul a good many TOFCs. It sounds to me like there is more of a push for COFCs...

Or to limit TOFC to specific lanes or trains, so the equipment can be better utilized.

No.

They have a separate facility located in Chambersburg.

Geez, UP has been pushing for this, for seemingly a decade or more.  But now, you see even more standard TOFC on the UP then in years past; and especially the BNSF, seeing a lot more TOFC now.  A lot of second hand trailers out on the rails now with different owners and also a lot of refrigerated TOFC as well.

I have heard from a very reliable source that the Greencastle Intermodal Facility willl be put on “inactive status” on April 1st.
