This is the ex-CofG main line between Macon and Savannah.

Thank you for posting. Not much out that way.  Google maps shows nothing but single track in the area.  Got caught with the radio off.  John

The train was 192.  This was the same train symbol that was involved in the tragic Graniteville, SC derailment on January 6, 2005  that spilled the chlorine gas. Kind of eerie that it was the same train 14 years to the day later.

Eerie, indeed.  At least no casualties this time.

First, I hope the crew is okay...  and all the locals too.

Yep, NS has major derailments too...   Can't blame this one on EHH, CSX bad trackwork, or maintenance deferral... unless NS has started doing that to lower their operating ratio to try to match CSX.
If I recall correctly the cause of the fatal derailment 14 years ago was a crew error with a switch.  That doesn't appear to be the case this time.

You're referring to the Central of Georgia Railroad Company, which is not exactly the same as the Central of Georgia Railway Company that existed prior to 1963 ("Railroad" versus "Railway"). In 1971 Southern created the CofG RR, into which went the CofG RW, the G&F, the S&A, and the W&T.

Makes a difference to accountants. Might still make a difference in labor agreements.

Other subsidiaries still technically alive include the Alabama Great Southern, Camp Lejeune Railroad, Carolina and Northwestern Railway, CNO&TP, GS&F, and Interstate. You can see the whole list at https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/702165/000070216518000011/nsc10-kexhibit212.htm
