Looks like NS is now offering 20'/40'/45' ocean container service from the newly opened Global Container Terminal Bayonne ExpressRail Port Jersey to Chicago, IL, Cleveland, OH, Pittsburgh, PA, Columbus, OH and Detroit, MI. This new terminal is adjacent to New York New Jersey Rail car float operations at ex-PRR Greenville Yard in Bayonne, NJ. I'm guessing GCT containers will be handled by existing NS container trains, 243-25Z COFC west and 20R-242 COFC east?

Excerpts from Global Container Terminal's press release:"...The initial phase of the ExpressRail Port Jersey intermodal facility, which began service today, consists of four tracks designed for active loading and unloading of cargo from the GCT Bayonne terminal that connect to a lead track to and from the main freight rail network. It also consists of two high-efficiency, all-electric, regenerative powered, widespan, dual cantilevered, rail mounted gantry cranes featuring LED lighting to load and unload containers in the intermodal yard. By the middle of this year, the facility will be fully built out to 9,600 linear feet of an eight-track working pad, two lead tracks, as well as additional support and train storage track.The intermodal facility will help support the port’s cargo growth and have an annual capacity of 250,000 container lifts. It will connect the GCT Bayonne terminal to CSX and Norfolk Southern’ s extensive rail network, allowing shippers to efficiently and seamlessly transfer their cargo from ship to rail; and reach key inland markets in the Midwest, New England and elsewhere in a timely manner.“GCT USA commenced a comprehensive terminal expansion in 2009. Does the Port Jersey company build the trains? Port Jersey Terminal has its own locomotives.

No. This terminal is served by Conrail Shared Assets.

9800 feet over 8 tracks is really tight. That place sounds like a pain to spot and pull. Lots of work for an average length Pig train.

Thanks. I know there was some discussion about the division of work when PJT, N.Y. Cross Harbor, Tropicana, brought their own equipment onto what was once Pennsylvania Railroad Greenville yard and shops.

NYNJ Rail, the successor to the Cross Harbor, acquired Port Jersey a few years back and both railroads are under the common ownership of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. There was some talk about NYNJ handling switching for the new dockside intermodal terminal, but I believe that it's Conrail that switches it and will build the intermodal trains for NS and CSX. The expansion of the NYNJ's Greenville Yard and related float bridge work, along with new carfloats, was all part of the larger Port Authority project of redeveloping the Greenville area.

Now that this terminal has been up and running for a year or so, does anyone know how container volumes look into / out of here?  Curious to see if anyone has information about who gets more volume - CSX or NS.  Thank you!
