CSX Q604 with UP power almost 17,000 feet long

CSX Q604 Winston Yard (Lakeland), Florida to Waycross, Georgia.  UP Power and almost 17,000 feet long.  Dispatcher was not thrilled since he needed to arrange meets with southbounds and this train would not fit on any sidings.  Also, engineer was not too happy with no DPU and not enough power to make track speed.  He told the dispatcher he had all he could do to make 40MPH.

i wonder what the "real costs" are to running such huge trains (re-crews, delays to other trains, terminal/yard congestion, etc.).  it would be interesting to see if a few reduced crew starts for a train this long is actually worth it.

thanks for the video........

Very true.  The dispatcher was telling the crew that he was forced to either hold the train on double track (thus tying up a mainline track) or hold opposing traffic and run it all the way to Waycross.  The engineer was joking with a passing crew that it would be interesting to see how they plan to get a train this long into the yard.

2 thoughts.
1 I wonder what the tonnage was with all the phosphate on the head?

2 At least it was built well with them mtys on the rear.

Any idea what the mty pigs carried to FL.

A chance at race pond since retirement is an overhead signal at the N end and the right of way cut where you can see it instead of having to creep up on it.

Hello,

When the train left Winston, the crew reported over 16000 tons. It is unlikely the original crew made it since the train took about 7 hours to finally get underway and past Lakeland Jct.

Sam;

The empty flats on the rear end are PTTX flats, which are designed and designated pipe flats.
