Eastern Railroad Discussion > NS Twinsburg OH YardDate: 01/30/19 16:58 NS Twinsburg OH Yard Author: cr7998 Here is a view of Norfolk Southern's yard at Twinsburg, OH, on August 1, 2017. The primary purpose of the yard was to support the nearby Chrysler stamping plant, opened in 1957. Until the plant closed in 2010, these tracks would have been filled with boxcars for shipment of auto parts to Chrysler assembly plants around the country. This yard was busy enough to have yardmasters, based at a one-story yard office and crew reporting building, just out of view to the left. The tracks on the left were the lead tracks into the Chrysler plant. The yard was a stub end facility, but several of the tracks on the south side of the yard had switches near the stub end, allowing for runaround moves.
Once Chrysler ceased operations, Twinsburg Yard became a much quieter place. The primary business today is inbound stone traffic to Shelly Company, that unloads unit stone trains along the south side of the yard. This is seasonal business, spring to fall. There is also a local job that visits three or four times a week, to switch the industrial area south of the yard. The primary business there is inbound corn syrup for Coke and Pepsi bottling plants. The yard office is gone, as are the yardmaster positions that once coordinated placement of cars with Chrysler personnel. There are numerous warehouses and distribution centers now on the former Chrysler property, including Fedex and Amazon, but none have rail sidings. Edited 2 time(s). Reminds me to Wilsmere, DE, where a GM auto plant used to be next to CSX's Wilsmere Yard. Some of the tracks have gotten used for various things over time but the autorack loading tracks have never had another purpose, except for maybe car storage.

A visit to our relatives in Twinsburg always included an afternoon of watching Penn Central operations from this overpass with my great uncle. I remember the huge auto parts boxcars all dressed in fallen flag schemes being drilled in the yard. Thanks for posting this - haven’t been back to this location since the early 70’s.

Not far away was a Chrysler assembly plant at Newark, DE, that was served by PRR/PC/Conrail from the NEC. Chrysler shipped many thousands of carloads of auto stampings from Twinsburg to Newark while that plant was active. The closing of the Newark assembly plant in 2008 was one of the reasons for the closing of the Twinsburg stamping plant. Twinsburg stamping became an isolated outpost, too far away from the remaining Chrysler assembly locations. Although Chrysler had invested alot of money in the Twinsburg plant, it became uneconomical to pay all that shipping cost when other stamping plants were closer.
