I Have A Couple Of Q's
Author: overniteman

Both from this AM.

The first Q is Q158.

Alongside a freezing Hudson River, CSX GE ET44AH 3316 leads Q158 out of the siding at Fort Montgomery, New York and back onto the main for it's trip South on the River Sub.

My other Q is Q439.

CSX GE AC44CW 5104 negotiates the rock cut at Mine Dock Park on it's trip South, also on the River Sub.

Fort Montgomery, New York.

How does an even numbered train end up as a south-bound? Is Q158 the correct number? Or is it considered an east-bound? But then how does that reconcile with the next photo, Q439, also southbound, but now an odd number?

Q158 is, as you suspected, an eastbound from Chicago to Syracuse. Q439 is southbound from Selkirk to Hamlet, NC. It can be confusing. CSX has trains that begin at Cincinnati as northbounds on the old CH&D, become eastbounds on the old B&O at Deshler, then become westbounds on the old Hocking Valley at Fostoria.

Small correction, Q158 runs from Northwest Ohio to Philly.  It operates east to Selkirk, then south on the River line.
