Eastern Railroad Discussion > Compact car further compacted by double train strikeDate: 03/04/19 17:01 Compact car further compacted by double train strike Author: cinder BEALETON, Va. (Sunday, March 3)
Authorities say an Amtrak train and a freight train headed opposite ways on parallel tracks in Virginia hit a car stuck at a rail crossing, but the four people escaped from the car before it was struck.Virginia State Police said in a statement Monday that the Honda Civic became "stranded" at the private crossing Sunday night in Fauquier County. Police say the car's 18-year-old driver and three passengers fled unharmed before the trains hit the vehicle.Images from the scene show the mangled car between the trains. The Star-Exponent reports that they were an Amtrak Crescent, carrying 178 passengers on a New York to New Orleans route, and a Norfolk Southern freight train headed northward. Collins Lane crosses the NS at an ungaurded private road crossing leading up to a farm (Picture 1). A motorist was killed at this same crossing six years ago. (See below) "A southbound Norfolk Southern freight train (NS 211) struck and killed a motorist at a private farm crossing a mile north of Bealton, VA on Friday afternoon. The Collins La. crossing leads to a family farm northwest of the tracks. Ironically and sadly, this car/train fatality occurred only one mile north of an eerily similar accident in the late afternoon of November 16 in which a man was killed by northbound Amtrak P050 (The Cardinal), also at a private crossing. In both cases, the railroad tracks are straight for more than two miles and there are no sight obstructions. “STOP, LOOK & LISTEN” are words to live by.........Failure to do so can result in death." Pictures 2 & 3 show what is left of the Civic. Read more here: https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/business/national-business/article227097844.html#storylink=cpy Edited 1 time(s). I checked the NS symbols on Wiki and train had run from Fort Wayne to Kansas City, so this must be a brand new symbol on Virginia.

Two trains approaching... I think I drive across in front and between the two of them.. Oh, Shoot, the car is stuck !!! Fade to black.. Many wrecks on that stretch, in my experience.... including a fire truck that lost a race for the farm crossing, in front of a speeding southbound Amtrak... couple of decades ago... W. I remember in the 60’s the Southern E8’s would get up to 83 MPH before you would start to hear the warning kick in.

Date: 03/05/19 18:44 Re: Compact car further compacted by double train strike Author: cinder Didn't know the "Rock Train" out of Manassas went further south than Calverton where it switches off to the quarry. Also, the hopper cars don't look like the rock cars I see all the time in Manassas. Sure it wasn't an empty coal train.that would have headed across the B-Line at Manassas?

Normally hitting an auto is a simple thunk and a long delay. This incident put the struck vehicle right next to the train.
