A Unique CSX DP Consist
Author: K8DTI

CSX Q575-22 departed Cincinnati this afternoon with a rather unique set of distributed power 84 cars deep in the 153 car train.

I used to see #1234 in Osborn Yard (Louisville) all of the time.  I called it the "Sesame Street" unit.  I know that it has been back and forth between Louisville and Cincinnati recently.

That truly is a unique consist.

I was aware of the GP15T but this is the first time I can remember seeing an MP15T. Where have I been? :-)

The rules may allow it, but I am not sure that I would want to put a butt-head in that position.

Just in case ya didnt find it, but EMD built 43 of this model. Dow Chemical got one, rest to SBD SYS then CSX. Ben

That is truly unique, I've never seen a photo of something like that. I once caught an MP15 working hard in a power set either front or rear on a road freight up a grade in Richmond, VA, but certainly never as DPU. So long as one of those three has the DPU software and connections, the GP15T/MP15T can assist with it?

Could be the EMD's are only along for the ride, power shuffle between yards?

If that was the case, why didn't they leave them at the head end??

Most if not all of those butt head engines have a 20 powered/dynamic brake axle limit as the they don't have coupler liiting blocks. Depending what power was on the front this might of been the better postion for it to ride.

Yes. The GE unit pressumably is DP equipped. It passes along the lead units commands through the locos mu'ed to it.

I've seen something similar before. The DP unit had a mechanical failure, they added 2 GP38-2's behind it. Even though it couldn't load itself, the electronics allowed it to control the 2 other units.

I'm sure the butt head was isolated as there is no way it could make enough amperage at road speed to actually contribute to the work....it's like using a bicyle and rider to push a Cadillac....he might get it moving...but he'll wear himself out in very short order. And the 3109 indeed is the controlling remote unit....

That MP15T has same prime as a GP15T - EMD 8-645E3 producing up to 1650hp.  Both units were rated at 1500hp and geared for 65mph.
MP15T was the most advanced switcher bodied unit ever produced by EMD.

After the merger (Family Lines + Chessie System into CSX) the company was looking for dependable fuel efficient new units that could be used for everything from yard switching to MU'd in road service.  EMD developed the 8-cylinder version of the 645E and offered it turbocharged in both a road diesel body (GP15T) and switcher body (MP15T).   CSX got 25 of the GP15T (and assigned those to C&O Chessie) and 42 of the MP15T (assigned to Seaboard System).
