Is this a site of an old passenger station? The platforms and sheds look like some remnant of the past. Currently the Amtrak station, or is that somewhere else? Have quickly viewed this from the interstate as I drive past, so would like to have a better understanding. Thanks, Tony Marchiando Date: 04/07/19 10:57 Re: A few photos at Birmingham, AL Author: NS4271 Here is Amtrak station in Birmingham, Alabama.
Platform is still original along tracks, but new station along street. Date: 04/07/19 12:25 Re: A few photos at Birmingham, AL Author: ctillnc The vicinity was originally L&N's 1877 station, before the RRs were elevated through downtown Birmingham in the 1930s. During the elevation project, L&N built new platforms connected to the old station to replace the 1877 trainshed. In 1960 L&N opened a new station, using the same platforms. Then Amtrak occupied the new multi-modal station, using one of the 1933 platforms. The other platform still stands, with its tracks disconnected; it had been an HFCS transloading site in the 1970s and 1980s.

Arrived on Seaboard (can't recall if still SAL or SCL at that time) and departed on Southern Rwy. Station looked completely different: kind of a baroque architecture with a dome. Would that have been a "Union" station?

Ed Date: 04/07/19 15:54 Re: A few photos at Birmingham, AL Author: SOUCF25 Terminal Station was the true "Union" station. It served the Central of Georgia, Frisco, IC, Southern, and Seaboard.
