A-line is single track at that point. 97 delayed 7 hours. 52 is estimated to arrive Lorton 8 hours late. 98 delayed 9 hours.

If that is the only "derailment" it is nothing. No reason
for long delays. When I worked we could get that up
in 20-30 minutes.

Regardless of whether company forces or a contractor is used, you have to call and assemble people, drive to the site, and get set up.  A train behind the derailed one probably needs to cut off and come pull the hind end away from the derailed car.  The train didn’t separate but the couplers are likely in a bind such that the head end can’t pull away until something is done.  By that time the original crew may have died so you wait for a new crew.  You are correct that the actual retailing of the car is not a big deal, but then you have to get that car set out somewhere so it can be inspected later and likely have a wheel set changed out.  The track has to be inspected.  The train has to be reassembled and underway.  Then, of course, you have to deal with the congestion that has built up during this time.  Nothing is simple.

Got off on a crossing....it's a wonder whatever went wrong didn't put the whole train on it's side! Some crossings are downright scary from the point of view of we crews.
