Eastern Railroad Discussion > NS Coal Drag Derails Woodville AlabamaDate: 05/07/19 06:13 NS Coal Drag Derails Woodville Alabama Author: NSSpike Norfolk Southern had a derailment in Woodville Alabama yesterday around 10AM eastern. The 135 car loaded coal train was heading east on the Alabama Memphis East District, east of Paint Rock Alabama and east of MP318A. The BSNF PRB coal train interchanged to the NS in Memphis and was symbol-ed as NS 736 with a final destination to Georgia Power's Plant Scherer in Juliette Georgia. Around 20 cars derailed toward the rear of the train about 95 cars back.R.J Corman was on scene pretty quick and began the clean up process. Plans were to try to have the line back in restricted operation sometime this morning close to 24 hours after the incident. The head end 95 loaded cars and BNSF Units #6435 & #9269 are expected to be at the plant after mid-day May 7, 2019.There were no injuries reported.
Some Atlanta / Memphis / Macon traffic is been re-routed via the Alabama East End District. 23N, 735, 733, 364 that I know of. This and the cars falling into the Juniata river.
Rich S Date: 05/07/19 07:55 Re: NS Coal Drag Derails Woodville Alabama Author: NSSpike Not at all uncommon for empty Scherer coal drags to head back west Via the Alabama East End under normal operations. However as a result of this derailment several as MTY's that were east of the derailment are now taking the East End route.
And one rather interesting routing for an MTY that got north out of Atlanta Monday morning. NS 733 with 135 cars at about 7500ft made it to NS Forestville Yard in Rome and tied down. Early evening the head end locomotives were cut loose and an EOT was placed on the first car. A crew boarded the rear DPU's that now became the head end power and headed back south to CP Green. Where under a TA they took the C-Line to Cedartown, Buchanan and Bremen Georgia.Around 4am this morning at Bremen the train took the north leg off the C-line through the tight quarters in the alley to the Alabama East End storage yard. There an Alabama crew took the train west to Birmingham. That may be a first re-route of a Schere train over the jointed rail between the buildings in town.BNSF # 5938 & # 6129 lead the move southward down the C-Line. I was aware of the one last year in Huntington but not of any more recent. Thanks! True... but I have heard NS is short crews on that line And / or the Columbus - Macon line. And any great desire to add crews isn't a factor. Fact that the East End has lost 2 trains that annulled in early April isn't helping either. NS 22Q Atlanta-New Orleans & 298 New Orleans - Atlanta. Often hear east bound crews remind dispatcher to line them up with a taxi back to Birmingham. As listed in the original post, empty Sherer coal drags running west on the East End regularly is 'very common occurrence. It messed up the one track and a few cars went in the river. Date: 05/07/19 14:30 Re: NS Coal Drag Derails Woodville Alabama Author: reel_smooth Yes, yesterday’s was infact 39Q. 6 cars derailed, 5 of which were empty tank cars that went in the river. Main 2 was blocked, but, main 1 was open after a brief delay to clean up some debris.
Posted from iPhone ** Correction ** the five empties that went in the river were covered hoppers, not tank cars. But they were empty never the less. Also, there is archived audio of it on Youtube, courtesy of Marc L. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/07/19 17:14 by reel_smooth. |
