Eastern Railroad Discussion > Concrete Falls from NS Bridge-ChicagoDate: 05/07/19 04:52 Concrete Falls from NS Bridge-Chicago Author: kevink What appears to be the outer parapet wall and railing has fallen from an MS overpass at 87th Street and Anthony Ave in Chicago.
https://abc7chicago.com/traffic/partial-rail-bridge-collapse-closes-87th-street-on-south-side/5288650/ This may affect Amtrak trains using this route. Posted from iPhone Date: 05/07/19 05:53 Re: Concrete Falls from NS Bridge-Chicago Author: Gonut1 This is very similar to the collapse in Syracuse last year. The parapet wall of a former Erie-Lackawanna bridge fell onto the street below. Usually the parapet is not important to the weight carrying structure and will not affect rail traffic. The parapet falling is an obvious danger to anyone below and also to any railroad personnel due to the lose of protection from falling from the right of way in the execution of their job.

Note the heavy pavers and streetcar rails which are still quite common under the hundreds of viaducts in Chicago. ------------------------------------------------------- > Was the parapet struck by an over height truck? Recently? The bridge is signed "13ft 6in". The east bridge does not have the concrete sides. The west bridge has concrete sides. The east side of the bridge appears to have the full concrete side. The west side facing the Skyway was already missing a lot of concrete. I assume that the bridge has had plenty of abuse. |
