Eastern Railroad Discussion > "On The West Shore and O&W" NYS&W Utica BranchDate: 05/17/19 17:05 "On The West Shore and O&W" NYS&W Utica Branch Author: ut-1 New York, Susquehanna & Western has an industrial spur off its Utica main in Utica, NY to serve several customers.
The "industrial" includes tracks once owned by the West Shore and NY Ontario & Western railroads. This video shows the Susquehanna local on the Utica industrial on May 15th. Three photos: 1) a mostly black cat in the gauge on the Utica main (Schuyler Street); 2) NYS&W No. 3040 on Schuyler Street You must be a registered subscriber to watch videos. Join Today! When I look at that track and the dips especially under the rail joints, I cringe. I do not understand why their track gang does not come out to jack up and tamp ballast under those joints. Yes, I know it takes time and money, but this is badly needed and will give a longer life to the rail itself and less of a chance for a derailment. There is a spot on the line where you can see that a new cross tie was recently inserted under a joint and yet there is a big dip there. This can easily be remedied by jacking it up and pushing ballast under that new tie.
