Georges Creek Railway on the Move - 30 May 2019
Author: DTWilson

George's Creek Railway recently closed the purchase on property between Westernport and Barton, MD to be used as their new shop facility. The property once used by a local trucking company includes a large maintenance garage and plenty of level ground. Also nearby is the mainline of the George's Creek Railway "short-line".

Long stored near Creekside Park in Westernport, the pair of SD's and GP9's were moved to the new shop on Thursday. Safe to say this is the first time he Big SD's had touch this portion of their former owners trackage as the WM six-axle units were kept off this portion of the Western Maryland.

1) The locomotives at Creekside Park as they prepare to move to the new shop area.

2) Coming out of the weeds at Franklin, MD.

3) Passing the former Reeves Garage and "wrecking yard" in Franklin.

1) Crossing Rt. 36 at Franklin, MD. The crossing has warning devices but I chose to crop them out.....

2) Little further north (or RR west) the George's Creek Railway crosses their namesake... Georges Creek. Flooding damaged part of the approach to the bridge and was recently repaired to allow the movement to the Morrison area of the railroad where the shop is located.

3) Passing over the work area north of the bridge.

1) The light engine movement arrives at the shop right as the rain starts.

2) Old Friends.... FA #303 meets it's big brother #7471 again......

3) They are all Western Maryland..... The Ballast Hoppers are former WM before going to the MA&PA.

.. More to Follow ....

Great photo story.  Happy that the units can be somewhat protected.  Glad that you captured the event on film.

With the paper plant unfortunately on borrowed time, what is left for this railroad to survive on?

Beautiful locomotives need to be pulling something.

Nope, the paper mill is shutdown. The last paper was made sometime late Thursday afternoon. This morning at 9am. was the last offical switch for the Geroges Creek at the Clay Hole in the mill.

There are options for the railroad and the mill. Right now those options and related discussions are being held at all levels...... time will tell!

"They are all Western Maryland....."

Well . .  almost.

The box car is an ex-CRIP PS-1 and the S-6 is ex-South Buffalo 42.

Great shots Tim, will there still be in more moves at the plant to move stuff out or has the CSX job now been cut?

George's Creek has been retained beyond the shutdown to assist in the loading of raw materials to be redistributed to other Verso facilities.

No CSX jobs have been cut yet.. B771 ( Night Shift Junction Switcher) would be the first I suspect to be cut.

As Gerlad commented, GCK will still have a few moves in the future switching out inventory and stock leaving the mill. This morning the GCK did spot a few boxcars in the mill so at the very least there will be a movement to pull those cars when loaded.

Thanks once again Tim for your coverage and photos.  Let's just hope that the Georges Creek Railway can obtain enough customers to keep it in business.
