Author: NS19K Has the drunk girl that caused the Swanton derailment been apprehended yet? I've yet to see any official news reports that she was arrested.

Honestly I don’t see her getting more than a slap on the wrist unless someone can prove criminal intent on her part. Posted from iPhone Date: 06/12/19 08:52 Re: Swanton train derailment suspect still at large? Author: dan she move? no insurance?
Date: 06/12/19 10:22 Re: Swanton train derailment suspect still at large? Author: NKPSOUTHERN I've watched the video taken at the crossing several times. It sure sounds like the train was over the crossing for several seconds before you can hear the air dump. Eihter by the crew or by an air hose being ripped off as the train pushed the car down the tracks. But then, I wasn't there so can only go by what I'm hearing.

She then drove off and landed on the RR tracks. So, I suspect it will only be a matter of time before she is apprehended. Leaving a trail of damage........

Otherwise who is to say the car wasn't stolen, or that she didn't go home and get drunk later. I have witnessed two drunk drivers who managed to make it home before the police caught them. One totaled their and another car in a parking lot, then drove to their apartment and went inside. No video or description of the driver. The police can't assume that the owner was driving or that they were drunk at the time of the accident. The other one was more frustrating. I followed a guy who was driving through lawns and was directing police to his location via a 911 operator. The driver pulled in to a driveway and the dispatcher called off the response "safe at home". Better luck next time. I now keep a camera in my car. It would be good to see the cab video to show just how little time the engineer had to see the car before he hit it. We got a better view of the car on the shared video since the headlights were aimed at the camera. I assume the propane tank was part of the switch heaters at the interlocking? NS upgraded the Chicago Line interlockings over the past couple of years and put in new switch heaters at most locations. Date: 06/12/19 17:52 Re: Swanton train derailment suspect still at large? Author: BCutter One other point about dealing with drivers who have been accused to be drinking but who left the scene before law arrived is that they can claim they went home and had a couple of stiff shots before law found them at their residence. They admit that they had been drinking but they did it in their home! Saw this happen following a car wreck in Missouri -- troopers admitted they could not charge the person who was supposed to be driving with DWI because of his statement. In this particular case, home was less than 1./4 mile from the crash scene and easily walkable in the time period between when dispatch received the call and the first units arrived on scene (Fire was first arriving).

I don't think that car is sliding into the ditch on its own. There's a bulldozer in the trees that starts moving at the same time the car does. I think the car was pulled into that position. That's how Hulcher was pulling cars of the tracks. The TV guy pointing out the railcar's movement is clueless about how it was caused. Date: 06/13/19 18:57 Re: Swanton train derailment suspect still at large? Author: Narniaman I was a physician working the Emergency Room one night when the ambulance brought in two car wreck victims from a wreck in the country. One was on a stretcher, and the other who only had minimal injuries, rode in a seat in the ambulance.
They both turned out to be drinking. I tended to the more seriously injured one first, and after I was satisfied that he was stable, turned my attention to the one brought in sitting in the ambulance. He was gone -- nowhere to be seen. Eventually the Department of police showed up, to talk to the wreck "participants", and I told them I had no idea what happened to the second guy. About then he came walking back in to the ER -- drinking a can of beer. He explained that he was so shook up from the wreck that he needed a beer real bad and went to a nearby convenience store to get a tall cool one. Neither the cop nor I bought his story, as we were both pretty well convinced he was drunk when he showed up at the ER. But -- by getting some of Milwaukee's finest in his tummy, he was able to argue that the reason he had a positive breathanalyzer was because of his trip to the convenience store.
