Fulton Yard Proposed Development
Author: Rivannaco

Just saw this pop up...proposed development around (what's left) of Fulton Yard in Richmond. One photo insert shows the several plots under consideration: one spanning from about where the coal tipple stood to incorporate the entire roundhouse area; the 5.3 acre one would be just west of the office building.

Looking at the map-proposal, it's a given the residents in any housing facility that close to an active RR yard will end up, sooner or later, demanding the RR stop making train noise that keeps them up at night or distrubs them during the day.  That's the first impression I got from seeing the map-proposal areas in question, on both sides of the yard.  Also, the red-highlited area called "13...." at bottom right on the map is where the turntable pit and round house used to be - literally the rounded-off area at extreme bottom right, where Highway 5 curves slightly to the right, then bends back left.  The pit is filled in now, weeds and trees are growing in there, and the turntable itself is, I'm told, now in use at the Clifton Forge, Va. engine-fueling facility.  Hmmmmm...... CSX might make a hefty profit from the land-sale, although I wonder what might happen to the patience of everyone living in there (in the so-called "section 13"), in the future, when multiple, daily and NIGHTLY massive coal trains thunder upgrade right beside the homes.........  A railfan's dream, but no so much for most of hte general public.  I hope the landlord/property owner always gives disclaimers to new residents before the move in - so they aren't surprised in the wrong way.

It's not as egregious as I expected, since it crams more stuff into space that is currently empty or practically abandoned in terms of railroad facility. That said, I agree with the point about noise- putting development on that curve means every monster coal train to Newport News will be thundering right by your window as they fight the grade leaving town.

I used to be around that area constantly about a decade ago and made a lot of posts on here about it. One thing that was very interesting back then was the rickety branch to the cement plant that had track through what is now called Rockett's Landing. A couple posts on that:

LOL...  Those developers will tell all the new buyers that trains don't run there anymore...   Then the new buyers, having no recourse after they buy and move in, will complain about the trains - and somehow expect the rail line (which has been there running trains 24/7 for 150+ years) to suddenly be shut down just because of their NIMBY snowflake complaints.

It appears that the tracks to Lehigh were removed by 4/5/2016. Even the cement facility is gone too....
