Ghosts in Upstate New York and a few of today
Author: train1275

A lazy rainy day in Upstate Central New York today.

1. A stop at East Meredith, NY at Hanford Mills finds what appears to be an ex-D&H box car parked on exhibit at the mill museum. This a good museum that shows off a water powered grist mill and saw mill well worth the time. The rail line was torn out about 1965 and was the New York Central Catskill Branch connecting Kingston with Oneonta. This is up just a short distance from Oneonta where Walter Rich got his start in railroading in 1966 operating a few miles of this line outside Oneonta. NYC ran the last trains through here though. The mile marker here is K 97.

2. A bit further down the road to the south is the NYO&W's Maywood depot at Sidney Center preserved for enjoyment as seen here with an old crossing shanty that was the property of Clyde Conrow, son of O&W train dispatcher Byron Conrow. Tracks were pulled here in 1958.

3. Standing at the abutment of the north bridge we look down on the trestle bent piers below. The O&W virtually soared high above the village here on two magnificiant trestles.

A view in the early 20th Century showing the depot in the distance and the horseshoe bend of the tracks in immediate foreground. The 2nd trestle is out of view to the left.

Legacy of the O&W - No Trepassing sign on the crossing cabin.

Coming back to today on the D&H we catch NS train 30T heading towards Binghamton just south of the Susquehanna River crossing and north of Bainbridge at Cannistra Lane. A coming and going away as the fog settles in on the distant hill tops. Power was NS 9751, 2635 and 9628.

We got a "heads up tip off" that 30T was being immediately followed by an 11R with a more interesting power consist. So here at the Bainbridge depot we have the 11R with NS 1090 leading 5 other units and Pan Am 3401 trailing.

Pan Am 3401 trailing NS 11R at Bainbridge, NY. The 3401 has been a frequent visitor on the D&H and is ex QNS&L # 247 built back in April 1973.

Great photos.

Hanford Mills has an awesome ice harvest festival every year.   Great food and you get to see them harvesting the ice off the pond and placing it in the ice house.   They have a local food festival at the same time.   Cooperstown, NY just north of here also has an amazing winter festival.
