"Power To Spare" MA&N Alcos
Author: ut-1

Mohawk, Adirondack and Northern ran a short freight with a lot of power on its 45-mile Utica-Lyons Falls, NY branch on July 1st.

More specifically, Alcos 2042 (M420W) and 805 (C425) brought a single covered hopper to Bailey's Mill, Boonville, 35 miles north of Utica.

I'm not sure why two engines were used; doing so did eliminate a drop move 2 miles south of the customer and also avoided running LHF (long hood forward).

The video begins with the train c rossing the Mohawk River, Utica.

This is former NY Central territory, St. Lawrence Division.

Thanks for posting.

What's really amazing:  2 locos and 35 miles to deliver a single load to a single customer. I'll never tire of watching these moves.

I always enjoy these " single car " or a couple more deliveries.    Listening to those Alco's is important too !

Very nice, harkens back to the days when the big guys used to do things like that for customers.

I thought the FRA put a stop to dropping cars years ago.

That's customrer service, right there.  Great to see.

Does this branch see longer trains serving more customers?  Track looks to be in good condition for only 1 customer...

Adirondack Scenic has trackage rights over the first 23 miles or so until Snow Jct is reached, just north of Remsen, where home rails are reached for service to Thendara (Old Forge) and Big Moose.

There are two customers in Boonville.

The ten miles of track between Boonville-Lyons Falls are presently used to store cars, this year empty tank cars.

Is this a section of state owned rail, leased to the MA&N?

It may be owned by the Oneida and Lewis counties' Industrial Development agencies and leased to the railroad on a long-term basis.
