NS brought into the Gest St. yard 9 new Tier 4 EMD locomotives numbered 8900-8908.
NS interchanged them with CSX via the loop track along with about 15 auto-racks from
the Gest St yard. They look showroom fresh after their trip down from Progress Rail last
evening down to Cincinnati.

I can smell the new paint. Looking at their order, there was a shop foreman who would make the hostler bust them up and put them in numerical order.

i am fearful that they will be rolling disaster areas, but I am eager to try one in the lead soon....I am sure they will get rotated onto my territory eventually if they don't self destruct!

How long has it been since the previous delivery of EMD units to CSX? It seems like quite a while.

If CSX like them I bet that'll spark a few sells.

Nice videos, those T4s look sharp!

Nice. I think the color looks good, but I still miss that classic EMD look that went away after the UP SD70M. 

If they go down like testing out west.....they're as good as scrap.

..and from a fact basis, what can you tell everyone about went on out west? What went on, what were the conclusions, what are the modifications being done, how might the CSX units differ.

Seems the issues have included software, fuel efficiency and engine cooling to name a few... enough that UP put the largest fleet into storage, NS cancelled their order, and CN is now trying them out for 3rd time and still isn't sold on them...   Unfortunately they don't have the sales base and GM backing any more to slash the pricing like they did on the SD70Ms to get any sales.

PS.  Have heard two different theories on the 8900 series numbering...   One is there's plenty of room for additional units (after the 9000 series Dash 8.5 units are gone) if they turn out to be successful...  The other theory is so that that they can be retired at same time as the 9000 series units.

Hopefully Progress Rail went over these units with a fine tooth comb before delivering them. Past history with new EMD products on CSX has not been good. The less than successful SD70ACe experiment a few years back paved the way for thousands of GEs ...... you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.

There's also the mandate for ultra low sulphur diesel fuel on the way. I'm curious to see how if it works this time...

So where are these locomotives going to be tested for a few weeks before they get put into storage? And where will they be stored?

I heard they are leaving Cincinnati for Jacksonville late Sunday afternoon. 
They’re currently parked adjacent to hump tower data center and can be seen from Western Hills viaduct.

You realize the "CSX sd70ace experiment" was almost 15 years ago with pre-production units? Build dates of 2004... A lot has changed since then with technology.

Pre-production not withstanding, I'm sure CSX knew what they were getting at the time ......... what matters most is they failed to impress ......... and given the fact that UP chose to park the majority of their fleet for performance related issues, who's to say these can't be considered pre-production locomotives ?  Time will tell.

With one of the issues on UP reported being engine cooling issues, somebody at CSX must be thinking let's send them to Florida in July and see how they do...

Unlike the newer EMDs of the past, I don't think these will be maintained at Cumberland....  [sad]
