Eastern Railroad Discussion > CSX scenes at the Harbor (Ashtabula)Date: 07/09/19 15:35 CSX scenes at the Harbor (Ashtabula) Author: EL833 I was up in Ashtabula, Ohio on Sunday the 7th in hopes of catching the largest lake freighter, the Paul R. Tregurtha, entering the port. Winds and currents kept the PRT out in Lake Erie, but CSX provided a little rail action. In the first photo we see a trio of CSX road units in the yard with the layed up tug Invincible on the left and the PRT out in the lake. In the second photo four 4 axle units bring an empty ore train in (K170/K171 I'm told, Ashtabula to Middletown). After putting their train away the power went lite back to the mainline a few miles south of here. CSX 4441 is a derated GP40-2, it's now a GP38-3S. Lots of history in these four units, as seen in the last photo- former Conrail, B&O, L&N, and C&O.

Note the Conrail caboose in the middle. Second photo shows the power below the ore piles, and the third photo shows the crew backing a cut around the far side of the yard to be spotted for loading.

Date: 07/09/19 19:12 Re: CSX scenes at the Harbor (Ashtabula) Author: railrob From memory, the coal train was bound for Bow NH from Pennsylvania comming down hill into the wye beside Ore Dock Tower into the main. Unable to slow they dumped on the wye. My cousin's husband was a welding foreman for conrail in Ashtabula and gave me the story and tour of the tower. Somewhere I have oics of the wreck.

How long have they been shipping the ore from Ashtabula? I thought the ore for AK was transferred at Toledo and went straight south?
