The CSX and NS in Cleveland
Author: erielackawanna

While my trip back in May was for work and pretty full, I managed to get some more shots between meetings and dinner.

Started with a CSX local switching near the steel mill. (If anyone has the job name or symbol for this, would love to have it, thanks).

Headed over to downtown and shot a Breda LRV.

Then after a back lit eastbound, got this westbound autorack. Didn't get a symbol on this one either.

Finally, two shots of some light GEEPs heading over the Nickel Plate draw in Tremont. (Again, if anyone knows what job name or symbol this is, would love to know.)

I had a short TDY stint in Cleveland back in January 2008. Went to Berea Tower and hung around for hours..... Government put me up in an Extended Stay suite with a view of a track to my south. Constant Conrail auto rack and high cube boxes passed by. I wish I brought my camera with me then.

Great urban photos, views you do not normally see in such a gritty locale.

In photo 2, the northern most freight tracks appear to be CSX - is this so they can access Whiskey Island?

That is the Amtrak Connection at CP181. It allows the Capitol to avoid backing into the station from the NS Cleveland Line. I don't know that CSX goes to Whiskey Island.

CSX does not have access to Whiskey Island.  Originally PRR, the iron ore facility at Whiskey Island made the progression to PC, Conrail, and NS.  To my knowledge, no other carrier has ever had access.  CSX does have access to the Port of Cleveland, using the track closest to the fence.  Rail traffic in and out of the port is erratic, depending on ship arrivals, so CSX makes this move only as needed.

Thank you gents for the explanation. In looking at the Ohio rail map, CSX has access up to the river.
