The regionals around Louisville Ky. today
Author: srman

Three from the Louisville Ky. regionals Sunday. First the LIRC JXTR crosses the Ohio River into Indiana after making a pickup from the NS in Louisville. Second R.J. Cormans empty aluminun train running as CSX Z544 departs Louisville with three tunnel motors in charge as it heads for home rails. Finally the PAL/CSX transfer (CSX Z576) has arrived back into its own yard with a few military tanks in tow.

That Ohio River bridge is just so impressive - couple that with the awesome-looking LIRC power and some sweet light, and you have quite a winning photograph.

Thanks for sharing!

It's really nice at extreme low water.... you can walk almost underneath the bridge and shoot straight up.

Seeing bridges like this one makes me wish I had become an engineer and bridge inspector, so I could crawl and walk all over them, looking at every detail.  Such an impressive structure!!

That bridge, like so many others around the country, needs to be repainted now.

It appears that there is a large platform hanging under the bridge for just such purposes?
Maybe someone heard your wish and is waiting for you!

A nice splash of color in today's railroad scene.

Thanks for the pictures. I hadn't thought about it, but Louisville appears to be a center for regional railroad activity.

Nice photos, thanks for sharing! The Ohio Valley, especially Louisville and Cincinnati, can be a beehive of activity.

Shot # 1 is a DANGED FINE PHOTO. I realize it is not a 4-8-8-4 but nevertheless......and I love the PRR style, despite being a NYC loyalist.

No one seems to have noticed (or perhaps it was implicit in other remarks) that this bridge is the one that the Pennsy used into Louisville. So, it's especially nice to see units with the L&I's PRR-inspired paint scheme crossing this span. The Pennsy liked to run Baldwin Sharks down to Louisville; they are in some videos depicting action in Indiana on the line to Louisville. Not to take anything away from this and the other two fine images, but just imagine what a pair of Sharks would look like on that bridge.

Thanks for the fine images. Most enjoyable.

How many trains of all railroads use this bridge EACH DAY? How far is Union Station from the bridge scene?

Thanks for all the comments! As for the number of trains that cross it these days my guess would be 8-12. Couple moves from the LIRC, a CSX local then a few CSX Q trains either heading for Indy or Cincinnati.

I would guess less than 5 miles from Union Station. I would like to know what the traffic levels were like 100 years ago and what commodities. Plenty of coal for sure and Florida bound passengers. Cotton, lumber and produce northbound perhaps?
