Eastern Railroad Discussion > The Erie Railroad rememberedDate: 08/13/19 12:37 The Erie Railroad remembered Author: EL833 Nosed around Huntington, Indiana on my way home from Illinois on Monday. I had spotted a small city sign that said "Erie Rail Trail" with an arrow pointing the way so off I went in search of it. Part of the former Erie/EL right of way through town has been converted into a nice trail. While I didn't have time to explore all of it, what I did see seemed pretty recent and from what I can gather was openned in 2018. The former RR bridge over the Little River has some nice lettering complete with Erie RR logos. Before you get to the bridge there is a milepost (Marion 126), concrete phone booth (ex Erie), and a crossing signal. There is also an info board with local and railroad history (and trail rules!) on it. The trail system also uses the familiar Erie circle in a diamond design reflecting the heritage of this section. All in all a nice nod to what was once a very important part of Huntington.

Here's a close up of the map. There appears to be one error- the Erie didn't merge with the Delaware and Hudson in 1960....but other than that what a cool info board and map to have on your trail. Happy they gave the EL some acknowledgement as well! Still somewhat sad to see though. Thanks for the nice selection of shots. That was an area I never had time to get to.
