Schenectady Way Today
Author: train1275

Schenectady has always meant two things to me; General Electric and American Locomotive Company. It is a city that has had good times and hard times as has the surrounding area. Today was a low key day railfaning the area and dodging the rain and storms.

1. Amtrak 105 leads Train 69 "The Adirondack" north out of Schenectady and through Mohawk Yard, or at least what remains of the former D&H Mohawk Yard.

2. Train 69 slides around the bend and will make the next stop in Saratoga Springs.

3. At the north end of Mohawk Yard is Alplaus Road and the little village of Alplaus where this marker comemorates a rather dark day in Schenectady history, the Schenectady Massacre of February 1690. Here on the eve of the massacre camped the French and Indians.

4. After Amtrak 69 clears NS 11R comes down, the Pan Am connection out of Mechanicville. Power on 11R is NS 9498, 2629 and 9811.

5. The 11R had some work so he took head room on to the Mohawk River Bridge.

6. A green heron down at water's edge takes in the action.

7. While the 11R was working the 930 passed him by and turned into the 30T as it crosses the Mohawk with NS 9229, 7510 & 9725. The scene was brilliantly and brightly lit until the train arrived and then the sun simulated a total eclipse with huge cloud cover. After waiting a while for 11R it started to rain and the pangs of hunger hit and it was off to Katie O' Byrnes Irish Pub in downtown Schenectady. Through the rain dropped windows Amtrak 48 was seen to pull in on time and about an hour after the 30T had cleared the bridge 11R finally came out and past the Amtrak Station. No pics but a fine view while enjoying lunch.

8. After lunch the rain had stopped and off to Lock 10 at Cranesville. A boat is in the lock going up river.

9. A CSX intermodal comes east with CSX 5232 and 544 leading.

10. Containers roll east along the Mohawk at Cranesville.

11. CSX 3285 leads another intermodal east - might be the Q004. Lots of Schneider containers

12. and CSX 848 as a DPU.

13. CSX 5460, 966, 3014, 349 come east with a NYS Barge Canal Tug / Barge tied up on the south side. It is about 4:49 PM the sky is totally overcast and it is raining.
Just about too dark for pics even on an August afternoon. No one ever said Upstate NY was ever a place to go for sunshine.

14. Afterwards the sun sets and makes a dramatic end to the day.
