Railroad Communication Question
Author: Cumberland

How do railroad crews identify themselves when they do not have an assigned symbol/number, to use as a reference? For example, after a crew has cut-off from pushing a full-up train up a hill and is only them as well as their consist of locomotives, returning to the bottom of a grade.

You would likely use the engine number of the lead locomotive in the consist.

Almost everything has a symbol (at least on NS). Even on a deadhead to a different terminal we are given a symbol. Yard jobs, pushers, etc all have symbols.

Pusher jobs have a number/symbol just like trains.

Yes indeed, if you are on the mainline you have a symbol.....whether you are addressed by that symbol or by your engine number is a matter of what the practice on any particular road is. But there's always a symbol underlying every crew.
