Eastern Railroad Discussion > UP 1989 D&RGW in GeorgiaDate: 10/18/19 04:10 UP 1989 D&RGW in Georgia Author: RFandPFan Seeing a UP heritage engine down here in Georgia does happen often, so the railfan community was pretty amped up when UP 1989 was leading a coke train to Rincon, Georgia on 10/16/19.

That is a change in routing, those trains used to go GARR to Augusta to Rincon. The road crew would spot the load and usually have to pull the empty. It was a convoluted process you had to pull a track, shove it toward SEPCO and pull a cut in, repeat until the emptys were pulled and the loads spotted. The conductor got his exercise on that job, because of course there were road crossings involved. Coming from Savannah to the paper mill, you shove the train about 4 miles and the engines are on the right end etc. but if you pull the mtys, it would have to bee done holding the loads. Heard that a local job had gotten the empties and took them to Southover Yard. The loads with the 1989 went to Rincon around 3-4pm and the power went back to Southover light. W222 had already left Savannah after 3am this morning with the 1989 trailing 3rd. Also, there was supposedly a curfew on the Chattanooga Sub which is why it was rerouted.
