Thanks for the great picture.  Wonderful.  A sadly underutilized route.

I'm curious about the coal on the head end.  Did the train have a lot of coal on it?

A splendid image of a special railroad in some of the most scenic country in the southeast. Years ago, I had the good fortune to ride the length of the former Clinchfield on an excursion trip. I have never forgotten it and the trip up the Nolichucky gorge. It's great to see it with traffic rolling on it. and especially wonderful to see it with autumn's splendor. Thanks for sharing this with us. IOTD material, for sure!

Is that area accessible, or was this a drone shot?  Just curious....

Jimbo,

It was actually a unit coal train, T402. I made a typo of calling it Q693. Q693 passed through here about an hour ahead of T402.

Thanks.

Did the T402 have a pusher or DPU?

I'll second that in the fact that not only does the train and the scenery look great but the actual bridge over the river looks superior, not rusting like so many other bridges.  This really makes this a first class photo.

The coal trains usually run with DPUs on the rear.  Usually 2+2 arraingment and return empty with all 4 on the front.

DPU.

All coal trains operating the former Clinchfield now utilize DP power with Erwin (former pusher base) being closed.

As of this writing, Brice, Terrell, Middleton, Cope, Lakeland, Jax, pennyroyal, cross have all gotten coal from the Clinchfield in recent months, with quite a bit moving via Atlanta or Richmond.

Also, Shelby grain loads and empties, Charlotte ethanol empties have been running. Still hit or miss, with Duke loads for Terrell and Brice being the most consistent.

Definitely busier than in 2016, not nearly as it was in 2003.

About how many trains are operating over the line in a twenty-four hour period?  Or is there a set pattern?

And it's good to hear that the Santa Train will be running.
