NS F units up for auction?
Author: csxtravis700

Saw a post that the NS F units have been put up for auction at Altoona.  Also stats free delievery on NS System.  Notice was sent out this morning.
Anyone else hear anything about this or information to share?

I can't imagine ANYONE would be willing or able to pay what they are worth.  How much NS would accept for them might be another story.  You can argue all day whether it was a good idea to buy and restore these locomotives or not, but they did and the money was spent and it's not coming back.  Selling them off at a price the market will accept VS just sucking it up and keeping them seems rather short sighted to me.   I would say this sale is more about appearances and someone trying to make a statement then any economic sense.

SMH.  NS is starting to look like the old Penn Central.  Hang on, it's gonna get ugly.

With the false report posted a couple weeks ago about them going to Atlanta. Can someone say if this is 100% true?

If Scrap says it's true, you can take it to the bank.

I can say for certain it is 100% true.  I'm on the distribution list for NS Asset Disposal (and have bought quite a few items over the past couple years), and notice was sent to those on list this morning.  I will not repost notice on here as I dont feel like taking time to redact certain information,  Up to you if you believe it or not,

I will take you at your word. Hate to see them go but other than a tourist line I don’t know who would want them

They’d look good in the Reading Company F-unit scheme with Reading and Northern in gold letters on the green flank stripes!!!

How much would a recently rebuilt low mileage GP38-2 go for?  Or a 645-2 prime mover?  Weren't the F units rebuilt into GP38-2 units?

I doubt there are many buyers other than museums or tourist railroads who want an F unit, but a GP38-2 could get some notice

OK, I don't get what you are shaking your head about. There is no comparison with insolvent Penn Central and the current Norfolk Southern. Penn Central wouldn't spend the money on such a program. Yes, they did buy some former DR&GW F units, but they were used in freight service.

Comparing NS to Penn Central may be a little harsh, but...

1.) I strongly think things are going to get ugly.

2.) Most of us can figure out that this goes a lot deeper than "just a business decision."

Do you want to hear about the layoff's or the kitten? Threads on both should still be on the first page of the Eastern Discussion.

In hindsight, the F's needed to be gone before all of the layoffs. Yeah, the Fs were and are pretty, shiny things, but let a man do his job first. There's other things to take pictures of

The ONLY thing NS is concerned with now is making more money for their shareholders, which is exactly what all companies in this country are doing. They are looking at the short term only, nothing else. They will pay in the future.
