Rebuilding good to better.  Just a rock solid AC44 freshened up and ready to go another 20 years.  So far, known histories are 7200 as ex 202, 7201 and 7203 ex 207 and 215.  Take those with a grain of salt.  Still quite early in these things hitting the road and rebuild cores being absolutely certain.

Yep.  So funny, though.  Before a few of the other Class 1s embraced AC technology, friends at those roads getting a hold of one of those CSX AC44s all just said "Man, those things pull!!!"  I know you know.

It looks like they've freshened them up and put the es44 cab and control stand in them. The 70 rebuilds didn't upgrade anything in the cab really. I had one the other week. It ran well, but was still the rockwell electronics in it.

The original AC's pull and the 6000's and the ES series pull harder yet. SD70AC does a decent job, but not at low speed, you got to have them stepping high and that's where they shine.

Because they are 20 years old I was wondering if the time had come for a few of them to get sold abroad to a brutal mountain railway - the Central Adino Railway in Peru, with it's constant 4-4.5% grades. But now that I've seen their operations, where C39-8's can lift the max switchback trainlength up with seeming ease, maybe the thing is the AC44's would be more powerful than needed, because lifting more that the 18~ car switchback length doesn't help.

A new coat of paint and a inward facing camera... About the most noticeable differences in the SD70 rebuild!
