NS Columbus, GA and Birmingham, AL Questions
Author: PRR_4859

Good Morning:

With all the changes being made on NS, do any through trains run via Columbus, Ga? Do coal drags still occasionally use this route?

Also, what trains (if any) now use the NS route between Birmingham, AL and Sheffield, AL?

Thank you in advance.

There are two daily through freights on the Columbus and CofG districts:
373 Savannah, GA - Birmingham, AL
378 Birmingham, AL - Savannah, GA

Empty Scherer coal trains rarely now run this way.  They usually run via Chattanooga or the East End District via Anniston.

There are also only two daily freights on the NA District:
320 Sheffield, AL - Birmingham, AL
329 Birmingham, AL - Sheffield, AL

Empty Scherer coal trains run this route if needed.  This route is also used as a detour for Memphis East End District trains (via Huntsville) if needed.

74G (loads) and 75G (empties) are coal trains that run both the NA and CofG districts.  They run between Segco Mine at Parrish, AL and Plant Gaston (Yellowleaf) at Wilsonville, AL.

Edit: On 11/28, 137 and 198 were abolished between Macon and Birmingham.  373 and 378 were extended as a result.

This changes raise an interesting question - with the abolishment of 197/198, how does freight get between Norris Yard (Birmingham) and Jacksonville, FL?
Thanks!

186 and 187 are still Birmingham - Macon trains.  They run the East End via Anniston, AL.  373 / 378 setout and pickup traffic at Macon's Brosnan Yard en route.  The same traffic is running, NS just changed a few symbols.
