The federal government and several states issued regulations on cleaning up pools of coal ash waste from electric plants. The state of Georgia has required Georgia Power to close and recycle its coal ash ponds and storage banks at deactivated electric power plants. Removing this waste could be a years long opportunity for CSX and NS, both of which hauled coal to power plants in the southeast. Georgia Power currently recycles ash from its active plants, but not closed facilities.  Coal ash is often added to concree to strengthen the substance.

The same thing will be happening in Quantico, VA where Dominion Power must remove thousands of tons of coal ash.  The CSX hauled coal to this power plant.

They have been removing coal ash for over a year now at a demolished power plant in Brunswick, Georgia.  A fleet of tractor trailers with side dump trailers have been hauling the ash to a lined pit at a landfill near Folkston.  This operation is planned to continue for a long time.  Part of the operation requires the removal of a lot of soil that was contaminated by the coal ash.

Grafton and Upton RR picked up a new customer, fly ash supplier Charah Solutions, at its Hopedale MA yard in mid 2019.

CSX has been moving ash within North Carolina. Fly ash might have different uses than bottom ash.  I have heard that fly ash is important for high strength concrete, however often bottom ash is only suitable for road grit.
