A buddy and I went by the CSX yard this past Tuesday. It was one of those days where at first it looked like we were going to be out of luck, but by the time we left, we had seen three yard jobs and one train and all at the same time.

Oh, and the two Alcos in the yard being sent away after working the nearby CMC Steel for nearly a decade

I decided to try to focus on the human element as much as I could

I was lucky because it seemed like there were conductors everywhere.

I liked seeing the ex-Conrail GP38-2 #8265. And then Q211 came in with two YN2 GEs. I hop you enjoyed the photos. Just to note I was beside a public road and not on CSX property.

Nice photos the human element is a nice touch every now & then. Not something I attempt to get in all my photos but it does add considerable interest in some photos that normally wouldn't be given a second look.
I wonder where the Alco's are heading, not every day you see a RS-1 anymore.

I wonder what the story is on the new turnout and what looks to be a section of track under construction?

I am also curious about the amount of traffic and sources of it that CSX handles at Cayce? Which of the railroad's radiating lines from the Columbia SC area hosts the most trains?

I appreciate any answers which you can give.

Is this yard former Seaboard Air Line?  I remember seeing an Atlantic Coast Line Geep near Ft Jackson when I arrived for basic training in 1959.  Not sure but suspect the yard is probably SAL, later SCL, CSX.

Not my territory, but the location of the yard appears to be former SAL.

Ft. Jackson looks like it was served (for freight) via the ACL at Sims SC on its Columbia - Sumpter SC branch.

Cayce is ex-SAL.

The aboveposters are correct. Columbia was once served by four railroads -- Southern, SAL, ACL and Columbia, Newberry & Laurens, a sub of the ACL. The merger into the SCL took care of all of that. 

Those two steel mill ALCO locomotives are a super catch. They made this set of photos even better.

Great pictures!  Don't see much from around there on TO.  I went to Cayce once and nothing was moving, but the Columbia area seemed to be fairly busy most times I was there to visit my son who went to USC.

Glad to see this old SAL yard still being used, wonder when it will be torn out too !
